Sarasavi eBook Reader: A Multi-Platform Digital Bookstore Built with Laravel and Flutter
Konekt is building Sarasavi a complete eBook ecosystem — a Laravel-powered marketplace and admin platform paired with a single Flutter codebase for mobile, tablet, and web. The platform combines a full bookstore experience (catalog, search, cart, payments, promotions) with a dedicated EPUB2/EPUB3 reader supporting Sinhala and Tamil, offline reading, bookmarks, highlights, and multi-device sync.

Overview
Sarasavi is one of Sri Lanka's best-known book retailers, with a large physical catalog spanning English, Sinhala, and Tamil titles. Konekt is building the Sarasavi eBook Reader to bring that catalog online — a single ecosystem where customers can discover, buy, and read eBooks across mobile, tablet, and web, while Sarasavi's team manages the entire catalog, pricing, promotions, and orders from one admin platform.
The challenge
Sarasavi wanted to extend its position as a leading book retailer into digital, giving readers a single place to discover, buy, and read eBooks in English, Sinhala, and Tamil. The brief called for more than a storefront: customers needed a true reading app — supporting EPUB2/EPUB3 and image-based books, Sinhala font rendering, offline access, bookmarks, highlights, and a synced last-read position across up to three devices on any OS, including Huawei devices outside Google's ecosystem.
On the operations side, Sarasavi's team needed a single admin platform to manage the catalog, authors, publishers, and categories, run flexible discount and coupon campaigns by product, category, author, publisher, or language, process orders and refunds, moderate reviews, and send push notifications for new releases and promotions — all without guest checkout, so every purchase stays tied to a registered, verified account.
Our approach
Konekt designed the platform around a single Laravel backend serving three Flutter front ends — mobile, tablet, and web — built from one shared codebase. This keeps the catalog, cart, pricing, discount engine, and order logic consistent everywhere, while letting each platform adapt its layout: a bottom-navigation experience on phones, an optional slider/sidebar layout on tablets, and a full web storefront covering every feature except the in-app reader.
Authentication is built around email/password and social login (Google, Facebook, Apple), with email verification and password reset handled through Konekt-branded email templates. For the reading experience itself, the team is integrating an EPUB2/EPUB3 renderer with Sinhala font support, a separate image-book viewer, and local storage for last-read position, bookmarks, and highlights — with dark mode for low-light reading and landscape support on mobile and tablet while in the reader.
What we built
- Book catalog and discovery — New arrivals, best sellers, and search by title, author, category, ISBN, or publisher, with browsable category, author, and publisher lists, and clickable author/category links from every book page.
- Single book view — Cover, metadata (publisher, category, ISBN, author), free sample reading, social sharing, add-to-cart, and user reviews.
- EPUB2/EPUB3 and image-book reader — Sinhala font rendering, last-read location sync, bookmarks, highlights, dark mode, and landscape support on mobile and tablet.
- User profiles — Editable profiles, library, wishlist, purchase history, up to three registered devices across any OS, and profile-completion reminders.
- Promotions engine — Discounts and coupons configurable by product, category, author, publisher, or language, with fixed-amount or percentage rules, date ranges, multi-category rules, and automatic application of the highest applicable discount.
- Payments — PayHere payment gateway integration, with no guest checkout so every purchase is tied to a verified account.
- Push notifications — OneSignal-powered alerts for new book launches and events, with the last five notifications visible in-app.
- Multi-language interface — Full English, Sinhala, and Tamil support.
- Admin dashboard — Sales and performance overview (top authors, top 10 sellers, monthly sales), catalog management with searchable dropdowns, order/refund management, review moderation, customer and device management, role-based admin access (Super Admin, Shop Manager, Web Admin), and CMS control over sliders, About Us, Contact, Privacy Policy, Terms & Conditions, and FAQs.
- Huawei support — Built and published for the Huawei AppGallery alongside Google Play and the App Store.
Results
Once live, the Sarasavi eBook Reader will give Sarasavi a single digital storefront and reading app spanning mobile, tablet, and web — built from one Flutter codebase to keep development and maintenance costs down as new features roll out. Readers get a complete, modern eBook experience in their own language, with offline reading, bookmarks, and highlights carried across up to three devices. For Sarasavi's team, the admin platform brings catalog, promotions, orders, and customer management into one place, with a discount and coupon engine built to support product-, category-, author-, publisher-, and language-level campaigns from day one — and Huawei AppGallery distribution extends the platform's reach beyond Google's ecosystem.
